Program notes for Rob Waring's "Smithereens"

The starting point for composing this piece was imagining the fate of small fragments after an explosion. The music focuses on various aspects of their turbulent journey, and follows them as they spread out in space, losing energy and speed. The music functions like a kind of magnifying glass. Time and space are stretched and the imagination is gradually directed towards cosmological associations: outer space and the expanding universe.

Smithereens was composed in 1992 and premiered in Stockholm in 1993 by Hasse Örn. It is recorded on the CD In Real Time (ALBCD 002).
